The Homestead neighborhood has a remarkable suburban feel, yet it is less than 5 miles from the center of Portland. Portland real estate here is apt to sport wide lawns on leafy streets and homes laid out on quiet cul-de-sacs.
Just south of downtown, Homestead is also neighbor to Oregon Health and Science University and its associated hospital and medical facilities. The OHSU campus is often referred to as “Pill Hill,” and was the impetus behind a signature architectural feature of the neighborhood: the Aerial Tram, which runs from the top of the hill to the South Waterfront area. The tram was designed to link the medical school campuses of the teaching hospital.

Homestead residents have a selection of grocery markets. Moreover, there’s the Hillsdale Shopping Center. Hillsdale is a good example of the adage that you shouldn’t judge a strip mall by the stereotype. When the variety and quality of shops are taken into account, its clear that the Hillsdale center is a thriving resource.
Occupying a strip of S.W. Capitol Hwy. near S.W. Bertha Blvd., it includes a grocery store, a pharmacy, a bakery, Noah’s Bagels, and a coffee shop. Paloma Clothing is also in the center, which is adjacent to Wilson High School. The county library is across the street along with dental offices, a veterinarian, a yoga studio, a bank, two brew pubs, a Thai restaurant and a Baskin-Robbins.
For farm fresh produce, the Hillsdale Farmers’ Market near Wilson High School is open Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from May through October at S.W. Capitol Hwy and S.W. Sunset Road.

Once away from Portland’s central city core, neighborhood restaurants tend to attract locals and some are very good indeed. Fortunately, independent reviews have been relatively consistent for outstanding restaurants. Some names that regularly appear on lists of not-to-be-missed dining experiences: Alba Osteria & Enoteca at 6440 S.W. Capitol Highway for its pasta stuffed with pork, veal and rabbit, also its loin chop and Italian wine list; Chinatown Restaurant, 14125 S.W. Walker Road, for its dim sum, shrimp or pork dumplings beef short rib sizzling platter and pepper-salted prawns; and Hakatamon, 10500 S.W. Beaverton-Hillsdale Hwy, which is tucked in a corner of Uwajimaya supermarket. Hakatamon offers an impressive sushi menu and an extensive selection of noodle dishes.
